Hand-Carved Birch Bowl
Iceland's most ubiquitous tree is the birch which make up most of its diminutive forests. Birch is also made into syrups and liquors and translates into the most internationally-known Icelandic surname, Björk.
Artist Lára Gunnarsdóttir chip-carves each bowl from a single piece of birch. Each work's starkness, restraint and strength of design reflects the austere, raw landscapes of Iceland- at once ancient and yet utterly modern. Like birch trees, no two are identical. Approximately 10 inches square.
